MARATHON DES SABLES

You’ve probably heard the stories surrounding The Marathon des Sables. According to the website and many runners, “The Marathon des Sables is the stuff of legends. The gruelling multi-stage adventure through a mythical landscape in one of the world’s most inhospitable environments – the Sahara desert”. The Discovery Channel called it, “the toughest footrace on earth”.

Competitors come from all over the world, over a thousand individuals from forty countries; men and women of all ages, sizes and abilities. The MDS is hard if you’re an elite runner, competing for a top ten or a top one hundred place. This race is hard on individuals who just want to get round and finish.

My goal with this book was to provide you with all the information you could possibly need to do the MDS. It also tells you my story, my journey from city worker to adventurer. This book will entertain, inform, educate and inspire you, to think about your own personal challenges.

CLIMBING KILIMANJARO

‘Kilimanjaro: Tips for the Top’ is an inspirational account of one writer’s quest to push herself to the limit and get the most out of life. Filled with fun facts about one of the highest peaks in the world, this book is a must-read for anyone wishing to partake on an incredible storybook-esque adventure.

This book certainly doesn’t skimp on the details; providing a day by day account of the journey so that anyone willing to do the same trip will feel completely and utterly prepared. I would also recommend it to anyone who wants to be inspired by the sheer strength of will of the author. This is truly a story of perseverance and strength of character.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is no small feat – and the book acts as a tribute to this accomplishment. Strewn amongst the helpful tips and factual information is a story that will inspire even the laziest of couch-potatoes to get up off the sofa and make something of their lives.

"A truly inspirational tale about the importance of setting goals and overcoming personal challenges."

CHALET HOSTING

Review:

Written in educational, yet bubbly prose, Sarah Williams (author and serial adventurer) manages to be both entertaining and informative. This guide covered everything you needed to know about being a chalet host, from where to work, who to apply to, what a typical day was like and how to survive the training week. As well as an astoundingly detailed account of how to cook the perfect meal (which included a section on cooking cakes at high altitude) this guide also included how to ace interviews and write an amazing CV.

This isn’t a job for the faint hearted: there is an awful lot of hard work involved. Early mornings, hideous hangovers and grumpy guests, to name but a few. But, as Williams so cheerfully pointed out, the job comes with a luxury lifestyle and innumerable benefits. You get to become a fabulous skier, a superstar cleaner, and a baker to rival the skill of Mary Berry. You come home with transferable talents such as customer service, budgeting, teamwork and public speaking. And that’s only the very tip of the iceberg!
