The act of hiking an established end-to-end or long-distance trail with continuous footsteps.

 

Popular Trails

United States

  • Appalachian Trail (AT) — 2,190 miles through the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Maine.

  • Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) — 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada via the Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges.

  • Continental Divide Trail (CDT) — 3,100 miles following the Rocky Mountains from the Mexican to the Canadian border.

 

Completing all three is known as earning the Triple Crown of hiking.

  • Te Araroa Trail — traverses the entire country from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

The Triple Crown of Hiking Award

Established in 1994 by ALDHA-West to honour hikers who have hiked the entire lengths of the Appalachian Trail (AT), the Continental Divide Trail (CDT), and the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). As of the end of the 2024 application period, ALDHA-West has recognised a total of 775 Triple Crown of Hiking Awards.

  • Appalachian Trail - Thru hiking 2,190 miles in 100 Days!

  • Camino Portugués - Begins in Lisbon, Portugal at Lisbon Cathedral and goes all the way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, approximately 620km or 387miles.

  • The Lycian Way - A 509 km, 29-day way-marked footpath around the coast of Lycia in southern Turkey, from Fethiye to Antalya. One of the ten most beautiful long-distance hikes in the world.

  • The Overland Track - Traversing Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

  • The Wales Coast Path - Spanning 870 miles of Welsh coastline — Wales is one of a few countries in the world to have a continuous coastal path stretching its entire length.

  • The Anglesey Coast Path - A 200-kilometre (124 mi) long-distance footpath around the island of Anglesey (Welsh: Ynys Môn) in North Wales.[1][2][3][4] The route is part of the Wales Coast Path.

  • The Pilgrims Way - An ancient pilgrimage route in southern England from Winchester in Hampshire, or Southwark, London to Canterbury, a 138-mile walk through wood and farmland, with views across the Weald.

  • The South Downs Way - A long-distance footpath and bridleway in southern England, the South Downs Way is one of 16 National Trails in England and Wales, stretching 160 km (100 mi) from Winchester in Hampshire to Eastbourne in East Sussex.

  • The West Highland Way - It is 154 km (96 miles) long, running from Milngavie north of Glasgow to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, with an element of hill walking in the route.

  • The Great Glen Way - A long-distance path in Scotland. It follows the Great Glen, running from Fort William in the southwest to Inverness in the northeast, covering 125 kilometres (78 mi)
