Route: 253km/157miles - The route begins on the island of Vatersay, and visits Barra, Eriskay, South Uist, Benbecula, Grimsay, North Uist, Berneray and Harris and Lewis, finishing in the capital, Stornoway.

End Date: 5th September
End of trail: Lewes Castle, Stornoway - there is also the option to carry on to the Butt of Lewis - but this is not officially part of the walking route.

It's a bit more difficult to get accurate stats for this trip as it was done in two sections. There was also crossover with food resupply and accommodation for other trips. So I've tried to do the best with the numbers and make it as accurate as possible.

Travel from: Stornaway, Outer Hebrides to Aviemore

Working on a 5 day hike - £34.60. For a 4 day hike £43.25* this does seem expensive for such a short hike. I did do a big food shop £32 but that also lasted me for the EHW as well.

Below is based on 4 days not 5 (as the first day I only waled 3 miles)

I thought this was a great hike and I’d really recommend it for new hikers. The terrain and the elevation is very friendly. There’s lots of options for wild camping as well as many options for resupply along the route.

“The Dava Way is an unusually varied railway walk, winding its way from sea level on the Moray Firth through forests, then over the Dava Moor to the Dava summit at 1050 feet (320 metres) before descending into Strathspey. Passing through a wonderful mix of farmland, woodland and moorland, the Dava Way provides an important link between the Speyside Way in the south, from Grantown, and the Moray Firth Trail to the north, from Forres. This beautiful part of northeast Scotland has a huge amount to offer the visitor and is still relatively undiscovered by walkers and outdoor enthusiasts. On a clear day, walkers on the Dava moor will enjoy views over the Moray Firth as far north as Sutherland, while the skyline to the south is dominated by the Cromdale Hills and the Cairngorm Mountains.”

After leaving Aviemore - there are multiple routes you can take, e.g. the East Highland Way, The Speyside Way etc and on the EHW there are multiple alternative options you can take.

EHW = continuation on from the last hike

📍Travel from: Aviemore and/or Newtonmore.

For these stats - I’m going to start the EHW journey from Newtonmore. As I included the walk from - Aviemore to Newtonmore as part of the stats for The Speyside Way.

🗓Start Date: 16th September

📍Start of trail: Newtonmore (approx 3 miles past the town)

Route: 32km/82miles - new long distance walk that connects Fort William, outdoor capital of the UK, with the ski and mountain resort of Aviemore.

“The journey passes seamlessly through enchanting broadleaf forests, loch-side trails and quiet mountain wilderness. It skirts unspoilt marshlands and also explores the last remnants of the ancient Caledonian forests of Inshriach.”

This wasn’t my favourite hike out of all of the Scottish Hikes, there were beautiful moments, and I’m pleased I’ve done it - but not sure I’d do it again.

I could also have done this hike a lot faster e.g. 25/26 mile days at the end- But I’d booked my train tickets and hotel in advance, so there was no point in me really pushing it at the end. Which was probably a good thing as I didn’t destroy my body.

🍽Food was one of my biggest expenses especially towards the end of the trip. I was needing to buy - wheat free, gluten free food and trying to have more fruits and veg plus meat.

Healthy food is expensive. Processed food are cheap to buy and I normally would eat more processed/cheaper food on hikes as it is cheaper and it’s also what my body craves - sugar and fat.

My gut on this trip was horrendous and I was struggling with my normal hiker food choices.
