The Spirit of the Rainforest: How Indigenous Wisdom and Scientific Curiosity Reconnect Us to the Natural World is a stunning hardback that perfectly captures Dr Rosa Vasquez Espinoza’s passion, curiosity, and deep connection to both science and the natural world.

Born in Peru and now living in the UK, educated in the US to PhD level, and raised within the traditions of her indigenous community in the Amazon, Rosa brings a rare and powerful perspective — one that merges Western scientific rigour with centuries-old indigenous wisdom.

The book is structured into 12 captivating chapters, exploring topics as diverse as a river that boils, life in the clouds, glowing creatures, jaguar perspectives, and even “evil spirits” — each chapter weaving together adventure, scientific inquiry, and cultural insight.

Whether it’s conservation work with stingless bees, diving into natural medicine, or exploring the incredible biodiversity of the rainforest, Rosa’s writing brings the Amazon to life in a way that is both enchanting and educational.

I’ve also had the pleasure of speaking with Dr Rosa on the Tough Girl podcast, and our conversation was as eye-opening and refreshing as the book itself.

Her adventures in the field, combined with her reflections on being a woman in science, offer a unique lens on the world. What stands out most is the way she seamlessly blends spiritual insight with empirical research, creating a new way of understanding our environment and our relationship to it.

For anyone passionate about climate change, indigenous cultures, natural medicine, or simply the magic of the natural world, this book is a must-read.

It’s an inspiring reminder of the richness of knowledge when we honour both the old and the new, and a call to pay attention to one of the most incredible environments on the planet.
