Renata Chlumska - Adventure athlete who became the first Swedish and Czech woman to climb Mount Everest and in 2005 did a circumnavigate of the lower 48 States of the United States by her own power.

I recently revisited my conversation with Angela Maxwell on the Tough Girl Podcast, and her story is just as inspiring as the first time I heard it. Angela spent six and a half years walking around the world, embarking on challenges that tested her physically, mentally, and emotionally. Revisiting the episode reminded me why her journey is worth sharing—and why you should listen to it yourself.

Here are some of the key lessons from our conversation:

  1. Courage is a choice, not a personality trait

Angela didn’t start her journey because she was fearless—she started despite fear. Her story is a reminder that courage isn’t about being unafraid; it’s about taking action even when you are scared. Every day on the trail, Angela faced uncertainty, whether it was rough terrain, visa issues, or swimming across the Caspian Sea. And yet, she kept moving forward.

  2. Adventure can transform your life

Walking 22,000 miles across four continents isn’t just a physical challenge—it’s a journey of self-discovery. Angela learned to trust herself, adapt to unexpected challenges, and embrace solitude. Her story shows that stepping out of your comfort zone can open doors to experiences and growth you never imagined.

  3. Small actions create big impact

Along the way, Angela partnered with organisations supporting women and children affected by human trafficking. Even while pursuing her personal dream, she found ways to give back. It’s a powerful reminder that adventure and purpose can go hand in hand.

  4. Planning is important—but flexibility is keyAngela meticulously planned her route, but she also adapted when needed. From navigating geopolitical challenges to dealing with extreme weather, she learned that resilience often comes from being flexible rather than rigidly sticking to a plan.

  5. Passion fuels persistence

One of the biggest takeaways from Angela’s journey is the importance of following your calling. Even when things got hard, her passion kept her going. Whether you’re dreaming of a big adventure or a smaller personal challenge, passion will carry you through the toughest moments.

Listening to Angela’s story is inspiring, motivating, and a little humbling. It’s a reminder that stepping into the unknown can teach you more than you ever imagined—and that courage and curiosity are skills anyone can cultivate.

If you want the full story, including how Angela prepared, what she experienced day-to-day, and the lessons she learned from the road, I highly recommend checking out the episode. Trust me—it’s worth your time.
