In this post, I’m sharing my daily stats, trail highlights, and honest thoughtsĀ from Days 1 to 5. Let’s dive in! šŸ“ŠšŸ“āœØ

Subjective feeling out of 10 on:

Enjoyment: 7/10

Fatigue: 4/10

Ease of terrain: 6/10

āļøHighlights: scrambling was awesome, good fun, not exposed. Views were epic.

šŸ”ļøChallenges: ran out of water about 12.30pm - it was so hot and a real slog to get to the refuge.

šŸ’Thoughts: great to drink water again. Note to self - drink water before I leave and carry 3 litres! It’s so hot out there. The refuge seems massive - so much space to camp, it’s busy but you don’t feel on top of other people. We set of at 6.30am - but tomorrow we do need to leave earlier - because of the heat.

Subjective feeling out of 10 on:

Enjoyment: 7/10

Fatigue: 6/10

Ease of terrain: 10/10 - one of the longest and hardest days. I have ever done on a trail.

āļøHighlights: stunning views, bumped into a tough girl Shadi who’s shared her story on the tough girl podcast previously. What a small world. Watching the trail runners go past - amazing to watch them run up and down the massive mountains.

šŸ”ļøChallenges: alarm at 4.30am - ahhh - packing up in the dark. Having a bit of a dodge stomach- not what you want! The insane amount of a descents & ascents there was a few gnarly sections as well

šŸ’Thoughts: I honestly don’t know what to say. I’m so brain-dead and frazzled. The Sun was relentless it never cooled down until about 9 o’clock. I was so tired at the end of the day - over 13hrs on our feet. Continuous climbing. The never ending descent. So grateful to set the tent up and lie down.

šŸ’°Costs: €4 Coke

€9 ham and cheese omelette

€14 vegetable plate

€5 flan - desert

Subjective feeling out of 10 on:

Enjoyment: 5/10

Fatigue: 6/10

Ease of terrain: 10/10

āļøHighlights: getting to the summit of Bocca Crucetta 2452m. A nice little scramble just before the top. Amazing views. Getting snow and rubbing it on my arms and legs to cool down. Had a lovely evening meal sat down with some fellow hikers. It was gorgeous out on the outside terrace with stunning views looking down the valley.

šŸ”ļøChallenges: I was so slow to get going in the morning. It was such a struggle climbing this mountain. So many technical sections. Luckily, we were in the shade for parts of it which made a big difference. The descent was done through the hottest part of the day. It was relentless there was no shade at all. Brutal.

šŸ’Thoughts: my stomach hasn’t been great over the past couple of days which is made eating food really difficult. I’ve been getting by with Kendall mint cake and a flapjack once per day which is obviously not enough food to sustain you. Which is why I was really struggling with the walking over the past couple of days. I finally started to feel better this evening hence why I spent so much money on food!

€9 ice cream & fruit salad

€10 sunscreen

€10 salad -tuna, tomato, onion & sweetcorn

€4 coke

€5 milk chocolate bar

€18 camping

Total = €78 - most expensive day so far!

Subjective feeling out of 10 on:

Enjoyment: 7/10

Fatigue: 6/10

Ease of terrain: 10/10

āļøHighlights: after the hotel it was very flat and fast walking. Like being on the AT and the hike up the mountain was done by switchbacks.

My appetite it back! I’ve eaten well today!! Needed as I hadn’t been able to eat much over the first 3 days. Plus I think my stomach is getting back to normal.

šŸ”ļøChallenges: sunburn on my wrist and 2 small bits on the back of my legs. The early morning starts are not good for me. Alex prefers to set off earlier and I prefer to start a little later. So tomorrow we’ll start separately and meet up later. Which takes the pressure off me and allows me to get a longer night sleep.

šŸ’Thoughts: such a long stage. Doing double stages is killing me. It was such a push to get to the refuge. Pleased I made it. So many great food places on the way.

Ease of terrain: 10/10

āļøHighlights: reaching the highest point on thr GR20. A hard core climb with a chain down a gully was a particularly highlight.

šŸ”ļøChallenges: everything! The weather, the rocks, the climbing, the descending. I kept turning another corner and the terrain would be the same, just a rocky path going on forever!

šŸ’Thoughts: it was so nice having a lie in this morning. My body really needed it. I’ve got a plan to finish the trail and feel confident with it. I’ve had to change up a few of the stages. But it will work better for me.
