How To Remain Committed to Achieving BIG Goals with Sarah Begum

Have you ever felt like the black sheep of the family? Do you have wild dreams that people can’t seem to comprehend? Do you have an unconditional thirst for adventure? You are not alone. Sarah Begum completely understands!

As the youngest female documentarian, Sarah Begum produced her first film, “Amazon Souls”, at age 21 in the Amazon Rainforest. She became Queen of the Huaorani tribe after hunting with the warriors, gathering with the women, and marrying a Huaorani warrior. After two weeks of adventure in the world’s largest tropical rainforest, Sarah dedicated her life to protecting the tribe’s land through her film and speaking work.

“When I believe in something, I have to see it through,” Sarah explained. No matter what or who tried to stand in her way of pursuing this adventure, she remained true to herself and her goal by implementing three key practices that she shared on the Tough Girl podcast.

1. Resist the Resistance

As Sarah began telling people about her dream to explore a foreign land, meet various tribes, and learn about different cultures, many of her family members and friends discouraged her from pursuing it. “They said it was dangerous, I shouldn’t go, and that I was going to get killed,” Sarah said. Instead of allowing their comments and concerns to defeat her, she decided that she wouldn’t allow herself to live someone else’s life.

However big or small your dream may be, put aside the opinions of others and focus on your “what” and “why”. There is a reason that you are passionate about achieving your goal. Don’t allow others to talk you out of it.

2. Knowledge Is Key

Sarah spent hours, days, weeks, and months researching how to travel, live, and survive in the Amazon Rainforest. In order to feel prepared and confident about her adventure, she sought out people who had previously explored the rainforest, interacted with the Huaorani tribe, and gained transportation resources and tips. Sarah also educated herself on how to prepare and travel with an adventure crew. “I had never been in charge of two other people’s lives before in another country,” Sarah said. She felt that it was her responsibility to protect and provide for the people who assisted her.

Once you’ve established your “what” and “why”, research the “how”. Determine what needs to be done in order to accomplish your goal. How will you get there? How many people need to assist you? What tools do you need to have on hand?

3. Focus On the Outcome

As Sarah grew up surrounded by brothers, she felt the need to continually prove herself. She not only wanted to be as strong as them physically but also mentally. This mindset and attitude was instilled in her as a young child and grew as she matured. She viewed her documentarian adventure as an opportunity to prove that she was physically and mentally capable of accomplishing such a strenuous goal. “I just wanted to prove to people that I can make this happen, that it’s not just a dream, it’s not a farfetched reality,” Sarah explained. Her passion and determination to do so motivated her to pursue it no matter what.

Set your sight on the end result! Become so consumed with the outcome that, no matter what setback arises throughout the journey, you can’t imagine yourself not achieving it.

After returning from the Amazon Rainforest, Sarah released “Amazon Souls”, won numerous awards such as “Spirit of Adventure Award”, “National Geographic Explorer Award”, and “Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship Award 2014” and has continued exploring the world. She recently created a platform that connects, shares, and empowers women in the world of adventure called “The Adventuress Club”.

Sarah’s determination and focused mindset allowed her to overlook negative opinions, remain true to herself, and achieve big goals. “Do what you need to do for you to make it happen. It all depends on your actions,” Sarah said.
