    Total Costs - Appalachian Trail

I have done my very best to ensure all the below is accurate and hopefully it all adds up! Some costs were difficult to keep track of especially when I was using cash as I did not keep a record of what I spend money on - which looking back on now, would have been great to see. There was no luxuries (although I do remember getting a manicure for $6 while in town!) all the money was basically spend on food, accommodation and equipment. I'm racking my brains to think what else I

    June Costs - Appalachian Trail

So I probably should have done this ages ago - but to be honest, I was scared about finding out how much it did cost to do the trail. In my head I was hoping it was going to be around $500 a month!!! I don't think this was the case!! I had two cards with me - my Debit Card for cash withdrawals and my Credit Card AMEX (American Express) for other expenses. Stupidly these card both have transactions fee and cash fees when I used them, which is not ideal. So I would not recommen

What I Learned From Thru-Hiking the Appalachian Trail in 100 Days

In 2017, I thru-hiked all 2,190 miles of the Appalachian Trail in 100 days starting in Georgia and ending in Maine. That’s about 84 marathons! I was looking for a challenge that would really push me to my physical and mental limits. Hearing about Cheryl Strayed and other women who’ve embarked on these long hikes, I was inspired to take on my own adventure. Now that I’ve reached my goal, I can’t really quite believe that I’ve done it, but I’m excited to share with you the less

Sarah Williams - Thru hiking the Appalachian Trail (2,190 miles) in 100 days!

After working in finance for 8 years, I quit my city job and spent 18 months travelling the world, climbing Kilimanjaro, backpacking around South America and doing a ski season. I used this time to help me decide on what I wanted to do with my life. I set up Tough Girl Challenges as a way of motivating and inspiring women and girls. I'm the host the Tough Girl Podcast where I interview inspirational female explorers, adventurers, athletes and everyday women who have overcome

Planning Routines for the Appalachian Trail

Thru hiking the Appalachian Trail in 100 days is going to be a challenge. I’ve shared more about my physical and mental preparation as well as the costs involved in getting me to the start of the trail. I have been meticulous with regards to what I’m taking with me and what it’s going to weigh. You can read these blog posts here: As well has having specific tactics for all aspects of the walk. The other area I’ve spent time on is developing my routines. So when I start I kno

Appalachian Trail - Equipment weigh in....Base weight 17.4 lbs

In order to move as quickly as I want to, I have to get my base weight down. Ideally I was going for 15 lbs. It didn’t quick work out at that!!! All in all, my base weight comes to 17.43 lbs which I’m ok with - I could reduce it down a little further to get bang on 17 lbs... FYI Base weight = Everything in your pack, but not including food or water. I have done a separate post on the costs involved in getting to the Appalachian Trail and what I’ve spent on equipment. Here is

Costs of thru hiking the Appalachian Trail… So far...

I have kept a record of what I have spent so far on getting myself ready for the Appalachian Trail. I have paid for items in both GBP and USD. To make things as easy as possible. I have converted the USD amounts into GBP. If there is no amount next to the item, it means I already owned it. I have also rounded the amount to the nearest whole number. This does not include additional costs such as paying for a personal trainer, supplements while training (including protein powde

Tactics for a 100 Day Hike of the Appalachian Trail - 2,190 miles

I need to really think about my thru-hike and how best to undertake it. There needs to be an element of flexibility built in, to ensure I make it to my destination (Mount Katahdin) by my deadline date - 10th September, but also to ensure I don’t spend my whole trip beating myself up if I don’t complete the millage and struggle to stick to the plan. The trail is 2,190 miles long, so in 100 days, I would need to be averaging 22 miles per day. This does not include the extra mil
